I thought i would have written a post about this by now...but i have started to watch Stargate, and more recently, Stargate Atlantis. I'm not really sure anymore why i even started watching Stargate Universe. I vaguely remember seeing part of the second part of the pilot on TV and wanting to know what happened. There were definitely actors that i know from other programs...Ming Na, Christopher McDonald, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Robert Carlyle. It's not like i was a fan of any of them, but i was interested in seeing more. In fact, i like how actors from other sci fi shows tend to show up (John de Lancie, Marina Sirtis, Armin Shimerman, John Billingsley, Kevin Durand, Grace Park, Aaron Douglas, Tahmoh Penikett, and Alessandro Juliani, just to name a few...though some of these actors may have been on SG-1 before the show i know them from). So i eventually made the effort to watch SGU. There was so much i didn't fully understand, which show it came from, where it worked into the lore, and i still don't, but it made me interested enough to go back and try watching Stargate again.
I was never a fan of the Stargate film. I don't think i could really understand what was going on, and didn't care for then-O'Neill and then-Jackson. I know i tried watching the show on more than one occasion...but i have no idea what episodes i saw and decided that i didn't like. So far, i only remember seeing one episode of the first season before...one that featured Teal'c hiding in an abandoned apartment building while sick. So since watching SGU i had been considering going back to the beginning of Stargate and seeing if i could get into it now that i've aged a bit. Plus there was a certain part of me that was nostalgic to see Richard Dean Anderson in something again (i really liked MacGuyver when i was a kid, though i hardly remember any of it now).
So i started with season one and have been working my way though from there. I just finished season six. I like the humor in these shows, and they have a certain predictability to them. It's not that they're boring (well..sometimes they are), it's that i can figure things out, they follow a pattern that ends in a pleasing way. No matter how bad things get you know that SG-1 will figure out a way to get out of the bind they're in. And the humor...O'Neill's humor appeals to me in particular. The writers', producers', whoever PTB, their sense of humor just leaves me in stitches from time to time. And i would say that i hate the obligitory end-of-the-season flashback episode...except they have done some really original things with some of them. Humorous and relationship-changing things. And of course...the obligatory ship. I want O'Neill and Carter to end up together.
As far as the content...okay, i'm a little tired of the Ancients stuff at the moment. The whole "we're too impressive to die" and the "we're on a higher plane so we can't be bothered to help our grandchildren or any other innocents" tripe is getting to me (moreso now that i've started watching Atlantis). From my pov, death isn't a bad thing, so i'm not sure that's a message that's good to send, but i know that i'm probably alone in this. I want to know more about the Ancients, especially how it relates to SGU, but SG-1 just appeals to me more. I like the characters on Atlantis, but the missions can be pretty lame. SG-1 goes through phases, so SA might improve, but right now i just am tired of them being stranded (couldn't Earth have at least dialed to say hello/are you still there already?) and their prefer ship-in-a-bottle episodes usually. The Wraith are cornier than the Goa'uld...dark in a different way, and i'm not sure i like it. But the Ancients, if they were as wonderful as we are lead to believe in SGU, certainly seem too fallible. Why doesn't the stupid city have solar panels or cold fusion or SOMETHING to recharge its batteries?
It's interesting, most of SG-1 happens/originates from Earth. The crew visits a new planet every week (for varying lengths of time), but the show is centered around the secret facility. Stargate Atlantis turns out to be the same way, set in a very static place (though it has a sense of mystery and hostility that doesn't exist on Earth. SG-1 sometimes brings the danger home with them, but SA lives in the middle of the danger). It wasn't until SGU, i guess, that they graduated to the Star Trek thing of actually flying around from planet to planet to explore the galaxy as a thing that is just as regular as using the stargate.
What i love about this show and its spinoffs is that they make fun of themselves, are not afraid of being nerdy/geeky, and blatantly so. There is so much techno babble. Now on SG-1 this works really well because Carter, Jackon, or Teal'c will brief O'Neill, who acts everyman/dumb, and has something amusing to say about it, and his heroism is so ordinary, he doesn't even act like it's a big thing, and i love that. But it's not really working on Atlantis. What is Weir a doctor of exactly? She's not a scientist, she's not a medical doctor, she doesn't seem to be anything but an administrator. There was this one episode where a (fake) Hammond tells her that she's not going to be in charge of the project anymore and she's shocked and i'm thinking...why? What has she even contributed??? She's not a scientist, she looks at all the facts and makes a decision, but half the time that decision doesn't make sense and is overruled by Sheppard or ostensibly unforeseen circumstances. She lacks credibility and her main function seems to be exposition and that's it. I can't even ship her with Sheppard. I kind of ship him with Teyla but not really. I dig Teyla's outfits. Now Teyla, she is a strong leader even while she retains her femininity. But the show is really stolen by McKay for me (who i never would have thought that i would like when i first saw him on SG-1 and SGU).
Overall...i do like this series (and to a lesser extent its spinoffs). I'm not going to say that it's my favorite, but it is definitely worth watching. Right now SG-1 has ended on a high point for me and i can hardly wait to see the next season. And of course i keep hoping that O'Neill and Carter will have more relationship development. I can dream, can't i? But what i like about the Stargate is how it takes old questions (to me, a long time sci fi addict) and turns them on their head to look at them a slightly different way. It's more military than Star Trek, and i like how SG-1 in particular is unapologetic about it (though their guns are often very obvious, it's also closer to our current military reality, i'm sure).
The irony is that MacGuyver refuses to use guns. I just finished the first season of MacGuyver and was surprised that i didn't remember any of the episodes. Well, i remembered one line of one episode, but that was all i remembered about that episode. So i guess i didn't start watching it at the beginning. So far, the pilot has been my favorite episode. It got a little better at the end of the season but i'm not really enjoying it all that much so far. Maybe it gets better later on? Maybe it's one of those shows that you can't really watch later on because it's so dated. I felt very insulated from the Cold War as a child, only knew about it from War Games and one other kids film as i recall (the name of which escapes me at the moment), it did not feel real to me as a child at all. But MacGuyver deals with it quite a bit.
One of the things i don't like about Mac is how he's kissing a new woman every other episode. But i have realized something, partially because of who produced/created the show: Terry Nation. You know, the man who created the Daleks? The reason Mac doesn't use a gun...is because he's the Doctor without a Tardis. He seems to nearly-instantly travel around the planet, and he fights humans rather than aliens, but he's the Doctor, no doubt. He uses what's on hand to save the day, rights wrongs, interacts well with children, the whole she-bang. So i guess that when i was watching Mac as a kid what i was really doing was getting ready for the Doctor. Does that mean that Richard Dean Anderson is my first Doctor?

Why So Serious?
Yep, i finally saw the Dark Knight, and yes, Heath Ledger was brilliant in it, but he wasn't the only one. i always hated the original Batman because, like everything else Tim Burton does, it's just so over the top. As a kid, Jack Nicholson scared me to death. i still don't like to watch his movies, he's just so oily and /shudder. But Heath brought a certain rationality to the character. Yes, he did things that were insane, but because he was smart, because he was brilliantly orchestrating things behind the scenes, and putting on a crazy face so no one took him seriously. It's funny, they could have turned this into another "why is the Joker what he is?" film, but fortunately they didn't; we didn't need that, it had been done before (badly). Instead, we got a brilliant look at what made Two-Face what he was.
Another thing that's interesting about this version of the franchise is that Batman is so much more dark and twisty even while he's being more noble and moral. He's harder on himself than he needs to be, in my opinion. i'm really enjoying these films much more than the old ones, and am really starting to hope that David Tennant will be the next Riddler, because i really cannot imagine anyone else bringing the same level of brilliance to the game.
Oh, and i'm enjoying the Scarecrow, too. And the mayor (Richard!). And more than anything, it just's wonderful to see Gary Oldman playing someone who isn't a bad guy. FINALLY.

woot, it's fall!
The weather outside is lovely, cool and drizzly. i am so excited for fall to begin! Fringe starts on Thursday, other shows will be close behind, and i have no idea where i'll find the time to watch them. At least Lost will still be on hiatus until January (is that a good thing?). There are also several new shows to try out, V being chief among them. Meh, i'll probably just stick with Fringe, Heroes, and V, but you never know... there's that one with Charlie, Penny, Sulu, and Shakespeare (/gag, he's fine, but i hated that movie).

i <3 Sylar
Well, yesterday in the wee hours of the morning i finished watching Heroes season 3. Right now i just finished watching the episode of Dragnet he was in, "Frame of Mind" (which you can watch on Hulu), a very small roll which was very Sylar-esque (perhaps what got TPTB at Heroes interested in casting him as Sylar? i mean, come on, they must have had some reason for thinking "he can play a feasible psycho" when they cast him). After taking in season 3 and Star Trek this summer i am a bigger Zachary Quinto fan than ever before. This of course brings out mixed feelings in me. i really liked the Sylar at the beginning of the season, that was trying to be a good guy, that had a chance at redemption as a member of the Petrelli family (who in themselves are completely messed up, as founders of the Company and occasional villians, yes even Peter when mixed up with Caitlin's brother). It used to be that Peter and Hiro were my favorite characters on Heroes, but now... it's Sylar.
How did that happen? Peter and Hiro are pretty undeniably good guys. But who are the two characters i would and do most regret the deaths of? Adam and Sylar. When did i become the girl who likes the bad boys? i never would have considered it of me, but it is true that i always drooled over Mr. Sark on Alias and drool even more over Sylar on Heroes. But i suppose there are other parallels, Edward in Twilight, Sawyer in Lost, Wolverine in X-Men, Mike Donovan in V, Alec in Dark Angel, Neo in the Matrix, V in V for Vendetta, nearly anything with Bill Nighy, pirates of the Caribbean variety, the list goes on and on and on. Though Elijah Wood's role in Sin City cured me of my crush on him, i have somehow developed a weakness for bad boys. This is shocking to me. i want to say that it says more for my strength of empathy and compassion than anyone else, but i know that's a load of tripe. i don't feel much compassion for a lot of the people that go through my line at work or walk by me on the street. No, this condition has been hiding in me for a long time, my first big crush was on a boy named J.P (who wouldn't give me the time of day), the next on a Tommy (who liked being chased), there was always Tim (first kiss on the cheek, totally blown out of proportion by his family), and then that anonymous boy at the pool (who was from Texas, that gave me my first peck on the lips, no matter how chaste that kiss was).
i have nearly always chosen my crushes based on looks and the same boyish tendency to pull pranks that my father has. What's so weird is that physically Mr. Quinto isn't really my type (other than the fact that he's the same height as my grandad: i <3 tall men): he's way too hairy, something that i warred with during his love scenes with Elle, and the same is true for Mr. Jackman as Wolverine. Give me the smooth bodies of Mr. Anders (Holt, really) and Mr. Trineer (mmm decontamination scene, anyone?), but then Mr. Sark had the tendency to be a pretty boy, too, so i cannot be going merely upon looks.
i think that it's not really that these men are bad, so much as the fact that they are dangerous. i mean, what about Edward is bad? Sure he killed a couple of psychos in his day, so they would stop hurting innocent people, but he's so traditional and careful that it's enough to drive anyone bonkers. Donavan and Neo and V are all freedom fighters, trying to do the right thing, though sometimes with the wrong methods. i think that what draws me to these men is really shallow but is also what psychiatrists that believe in cavemen would expect of me: i go for the guy who seems most likely to be able to protect me when things go fubar. Peter and Hiro and Matt (mmm gotta love cuddly little Matt / Eric) are definitely capable of doing that against the human element, but Sylar... for all that is strong about the rest, you've got to admit that no one can put down 5-10 members of a SWAT team with the mere flick of the wrist quite like he can. Which of course leads me to Dumbledore... who though always seemed to me to be the epitome of good was also always the most dangerous man of all, for he could bring down governments and Voldemort, had he set his mind to it (oh wait, he did).
This of course leads me to the question of whether i am only attracted to guys that are gay. i mean, there has always been the niggling question in the back of my mind about the guy i worked with in Lynchburg, we all know what Rowling says about Dumbledore, and now i've come to find out that Quinto has kissed a guy in a sauna and is mum about his sexuality in real life. For all i know he voted for Obama because he's gay, but he doesn't want to come out. And then there's T.R. Knight, another good guy that i used to be into, but also decidedly gay. Why the heck is it that i have to worry about guy's sexuality??? What is so wrong with this world that it's not enough that i have to wonder why i'm not attractive enough to a guy, but if it's because he just doesn't like girls??? i have worked with gay guys, and sat next to them in class, i'm not trying to be a hater, but now i maybe possible have to crush on them, too, and never have that emotion returned?
i don't know that Quinto is gay, only that he can act like he is, but i do know that i have this stupid tendency to fixate on men that are totally unavailable. The guy that led worship in Charlotte was the worst, one child with another on the way, and as it turns out this is nothing new. The guys who are most nice to me are inevitably always unavailable, the one flirty customer at the gas station, the soldier that sat next to me in Shakespeare, Kimbo and Robert and Justin at work. The guys who are nice to me, who get me, who care, are already married, already have the things that i want, that i guess most guys don't know that they want until they already have them, that got them kicking and screaming. And then there is my tendency to fixate on actors, to wonder "what if?" i feel like such an idiot for ever believing that i could be an actress, that i would become an actress, that Voyager or Dark Angel were ever a possibility for me (am i insane?), but that is still a small part of me. i grew up crushing on Elijah Wood, then there was Freddie Prinze, Jr. (/gag), then Mr. Sark was always in my happy place, and now Sylar? Why does this always happen to me? Why am i always alone, curled up with pillows and a dilapidated white rabbit in the dark, imagining that someone--who doesn't even know i exist--loves me?
i want to be loved, and protected, and i'm going insane because i'm alone, which so makes me unattractive to the opposite sex, but it's a vicious cycle that i don't know how to prevent. i don't want to love an Obama supporter, i don't want to love a murderer, i don't want to love anyone who doesn't love me for who i am, but i don't know how to stop. Unfortunately, i <3 Sylar.

Lost theories
First off, spoilers abound; if you haven't seen the finale, read at your own risk.
My mother and sisters (2 and 3) were incredibly upset by Juliet's death. Personally, i saw it coming, and don't actually believe she's dead. Katie and i have been discussing the parallels between her and Desmond when he turned the key. Megan doesn't necessarily believe (as Katie and i do) that Desmond was setting off an atomic bomb when he turned said key, but in both cases the protagonist was forced to go underground and manually cause a flash of light. We already know that Desmond was jumping around in time and needed a constant when he left the Island because he had recently come into contact with radiation. The question is whether Juliet, Sawyer, Kate, Jack, Hurley, Miles, Jin, and Sayid will have their timelines reset or stay where they currently are, in the past. Megan is of the opinion that Miles was right, that their actions were causing the incident, but Katie and i disagree. While the Losties were debating (and having fistfights) about the issue of whether or not the bomb should be deployed, Radzinsky was already causing the Incident. Everything metal was getting sucked into the chasm before the bomb was dropped.
i believe that the Losties will jump forward in time, but their arrival in LA is not necessarily guaranteed (i have always hypothesized that Ben wanted the plane to crash merely because Jack was aboard, however the season finale has revealed that people can only come to the Island if Jacob wishes them to). In any case, Desmond's past will change significantly, the rest of the Losties' lives have the chance to, and it is unclear if Juliet will need to come to the Island at all.
Re: the statue... i was originally under the impression that it looked like a cat from the back (i.e. Bast) but was always rather in love with the theory that it was Tawaret, the Egyptian goddess of fertility. This seemed important when coupled with the fact that women are having trouble bearing children on the Island. There are several things problematic with this, however, as Tawaret is normally only depicted with one ankh, the statue appears to be wearing male garb, and we do not actually know when the statue was destroyed (only that it is sometime after 1845). Apparently the statue has been confirmed by ABC to be said goddess, but this does not explain why in the beginning of the season finale, when the shot of the statue was shown, there were neither breasts nor a pregnant belly/hippo shape visible and the face of the statue appears to be more of the crocodile variety. What now bothers me about Tawaret is that she is sometimes married to Apep, the deification of darkness and chaos (Jacob's nemesis, anyone?).
All of this leads me to believe that the statue is actually Sobek, who is possibly Ra and possibly the embodiment of four gods at once (the ears do appear to be more hippo in nature but also match some depictions of Sobek). What is most interesting (imo) about Sobek is that some see him as evil, some good, and some say that he can repair evils that have been done. In some accounts Sobek created the universe.
Mom, for her part, sees Jacob as an embodiment of Christ, Katie sees the nemesis as Esau, some on Lostpedia seem to think that Jacob is Ra and nemesis is Moses... i would go with Jacob = Christ because of his apparent abilities to make people live forever and raise people from the dead, but i am not sure TPTB are willing to make such a strong statement. i am more likely to think that Nemesis/Esau is Ra than Jacob is. Whatever Jacob's identity is, i believe he is not evil and that he has the power to give life: case in point, when Locke fell, Jacob touched him, seemingly bringing him back to life (it had been said in previous episodes that there was no way Locke could survive that fall, apparently he didn't). Katie also notices that Juliet is the only individual not touched by Jacob in the finale flashbacks; she believes that Jacob was in the chasm with Juliet and brought her back to life (but remained unseen) so that she could set off the bomb.
Lastly, many people on Lostpedia keep referring to the cabin as Jacob's when in the finale (and earlier episodes) this is clearly confirmed not to be the case. In my opinion, the only person that we can say the cabin belongs to is Horace (whose name also has Egyptian connections, because Horus was friends with Sobek) because he built it. Of course the question still remains, who did Locke see in the cabin? All that is clear is that the man had brown eyes and long curly hair. Jacob has blue eyes, as does his nemesis (though the most obvious answer would be that it was the nemesis who was trapped there). At this point, the most likely candidate seems to be Horace himself, as he was trapped in a time loop building the cabin. My guess is that the nemesis was possessing Horace before he inhabited Locke, but this only begs yet more questions (such as was he using Horace's body or a clone as with Locke's).
As ever, i'm sure that i'm forgetting something, and by the time i remember to write it down it will have already been disproven (my statue theories have been stewing for weeks).

As ever, i'm sure that i'm forgetting something, and by the time i remember to write it down it will have already been disproven (my statue theories have been stewing for weeks).
observations on finales
Re: Fringe
~ Somehow, i knew as soon as we saw Walter at the cemetery. Interestingly enough, this means that if Peter gets anyone pregnant, the results could be catastrophic. This is rather like Lyra and Will in His Dark Materials, and frustrating because i'm kind of a Olivia/Peter shipper.
Re: Lost
~ Is Ilana related to Ana Lucia? Didn't she have a sister that was mentioned, but never shown?
~ What plans does pseudo-John have for the Others exactly (as referenced when he told them to rest at the Beach Camp)?
~ Richard said: "...only our leader can request an audience with Jacob and there can only be one leader on the Island at a time..." Katie asks, "Does that mean that Ben is the leader?" This is kind of a blatant giveaway that Locke isn't the leader, which i did not see coming at all. For some reason i was blindfolded regarding "Locke" the entire season, despite the fact that in the past i was fully aware of the menacing music sometimes focused on him during the earlier seasons (causing the viewer to question whether Locke has good intentions).
ETA: Of course this also begs the question: who was the leader of the Hostiles? Richard said it was Ellie, but Ben acted like it was Widmore. Was Ellie the leader first and if so, does she get kicked off the Island, making Widmore the leader?

"You knew...."
i will now provide an edited version of my response to tonight's Lost:
Oh no they didn't! They did not just kill Daniel!!!
Only when i said it, there was a lot of (&@#$(&@)($@)(*$&@#$ thrown in for good measure. i really need to work on controlling my tongue. But seriously: i was so surprised that a couple of bleeps worked their way in.

hectic finals preparation
i've only been watching Lost, Fringe, and two eps of Inu-Yasha lately. Every once in a while i'll catch an episode of Alias with my mom and sister (they're my dvds, but my sister is watching them for the first time, and some of them are new to my mom, too). i haven't been overly excited about Lost this season, it's been kind of interesting, but not enthralling. i'm hoping for a Daniel episode next week.
Fringe, on the other hand, is always interesting. i loved seeing the mini-Observer! And finding out about Olive... wow. Was it just me, or was her blanket starting to get bleached white when she woke up the first time (just like in the video at the end)??? It is going to be very interesting to see where this show is going. i think the woman in video is probably Nina Sharp and that next week we might finally get to meet the elusive CEO of Massive Dynamic (it's almost sweeps).
i am taking a break from WoW at least until finals are over: i don't have time to commit with it when i have work and school and am training for a triathlon. i have been reading a little bit of Twilight fanfic again and spoilers about New Moon. Mostly i am focused on RL though.
Saw the original Day the Earth Stood Still last week, was not impressed. It had pretty good special effects but the character development was thin while the director seemed to have an obsession with filming confused soldiers driving around in circles in the dark. i hope to see the new version with Keanu soon.
As far as reading, i'm slowly working on the War of the Rose trilogy (have the Last Paladin, can hardly wait to read it!) i should be focusing on Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, the Commitments, and other school related fare, but am sooo ready for summer break. i really, really, REALLY hate finals.

re: bad Ben
Ben always has ulterior motives. He "went to see" John: does this mean that he killed him? He obviously isn't giving Sun the message from Jin to "stay away."
My sister Katie theorizes that John was bitten by the Medusa Spider / given its venom and isn't really dead. After his conversation with Christian Shepherd, i doubt it. i think John is really dead.
My sister Megan was shocked that Charlotte died; i was getting to the point where i couldn't see how it could be avoided. When it happened, all i could think was: "Well, there's the first one of the season." But i'm starting to really, really wonder just who her parents are. Perhaps Ben and his lost love Annie?

recent viewing
Wow, i really need to change the header.
So... i need to watch last week's Grey's in order to catch up. As you can see, it's not high on my list of shows to watch (though it is on the list): i'd much rather be watching Heroes, Fringe, or the Sarah Connor Chronicles.
There is, however, Lost. i think that Ms. Hawking is Daniel's mum (from the jewelry store). i'll go with the idea that Dr. Halliwax (or whatever you want to call him) is Miles' dad. But i can't for the life of me figure out who Charlotte's parents are.
As far as dvd viewing, the family has reached the end of Star Trek the Next Generation. i missed a couple of episodes here and there, but i have probably seen every episode of the series now. At the moment, Mom and Katie are watching Alias, and i sit in from time to time. Last night we watched the season one finale and season two premiere. i still drool over Mr. Sark. The weird thing is that Katie doesn't think he's attractive. i wish they wouldn't have killed Adam off on Heroes, i was really trying to hold to the hope that he would come back somehow.
Speaking of Heroes, whatever happened to Caitlin? Isn't she still stuck in the future? They just totally abandoned her there. i keep thinking Peter will get his powers back, too, and was thinking about just how powerful his father's powers became once he absorbed Peter's abilities. Their power is very similar really, to make another's power their own, though Peter is more powerful in a way because he doesn't have to touch anyone to do it. i just feel like they've majorly mucked up the storyline on Heroes and really wanted Sylar to go good and become a daddy.
Truth be told, i haven't really had a lot of time for viewing. Lui just became revered with Argent Crusade and still needs some gear to raise her dps for raids. i've been trying to level my priest Eviengeline because the guild needs a holy priest. i originally intended to take her shadow, but having the dual specs to switch between will be nice with her, and i don't mind healing. Perhaps i should say yet, because i haven't done much of it yet, mostly on my shaman in RFK and SM.
i recently bought a couple of dvds, one of them being Run Fatboy Run, which i figured how could i not like it with Shaun (Simon Pegg). Which reminds me, i need to watch the new Star Trek movie's preview (as seen during the Super Bowl) but forgot my headphones of course.
Hmmm... better get ready for my next class, can't think of anything else to write.

finally it's WEDNESDAY
For some reason last night i was thinking that it was time for the Lost premiere, even though earlier in the day i had gone to my Tuesday class. So i watched a little Alias with my Mom and the kiddos. My, weren't those episodes action packed? In one episode Sydney drives an ambulance while being chased (meanwhile Dixon is performing surgery to get a bomb out of a man's chest), rescues a German scientist and performs a switch with him, and blows up a factory in Germany after going home to have a Halloween party in between. Lost is positively sedate in comparison.
In other news, i have to work tonight, so i might have to watch Lost online.

the Fringe Pilot
i just got finished watching the Pilot for Fringe, and all i can say is wow, just wow. The beginning was kind of gory and gross out, and i had to admit that i was thinking not another plane, but the show is very good. It's darker than Lost, and the entire time i wasn't sure who to trust really (i'm still not sure), but i wasn't expecting the twist at the end. The humor was extremely well done and the FBI bits seemed fair and balanced (lol): i'm looking forward to seeing more.

catching up on schoolwork...
This week we watched clips from Romeo and Juliet and Romeo + Juliet in Shakespeare (it's hard to believe that it's already been twelve years since the latter came out). Most notably we watched the scene where Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time in the former, and the duel scenes in both.
The first time i saw Romeo + Juliet i had not seen Moulin Rouge and had only a vague remembrance of Strictly Ballroom. i didn't like it, but then, i hate the play to begin with. i had no idea who Harold Perrineau was (Michael on Lost) or John Leguizamo. Their portrayals of Mercutio and Tybalt are soooo much better than the older version. In the old one Michael York and John McEnery seem like a couple of kids playing around. In the new version there are no accidents, it's violent and deadly serious. I prefer it that way. i still hate the fact that Claire Danes shoots herself in the head... it's supposed to be in the heart @(#*@&$.
So next i have to read Macbeth (something i have never been successful at) and drew Hamlet for my final paper (which we will be working on all semester, is our third play, and i have to read in British Lit). Shakespeare's going to be coming out of my ears for a while. i want to get both versions of R&J, and the Kenneth Branaugh version of Hamlet. i have so much homework this weekend....

summer is nearly over!
And it's time for a blog overhaul! i am going to try to blog here more often, on the many shows i watch, as well as writing movie reviews. i'm also going to try to remodel the blog a bit to make it prettier to look at. i'll probably change the banner (if nothing else) more often, to match wherever my viewing tastes have taken me. And once again i am going to take Southern Mama off the list of authors (she's only written one post) and make this blog solely about my viewing tastes. Further, there is no reason for me to be using the Muchacha de Hurley nickname when i haven't posted on the Fuselage in ages and this blog isn't going to be only about Lost anymore. i've already redone all of the blog's labels to make this more clear and streamlined.
This has been a weird year for tv with the SAG Writers strike and shortened seasons. Because there was less to see of my usual programming, i greatly expanded the number of shows that i watch. i want to take a moment to outline my television viewing choices... in alphabetical order for ease.
the 4400 ~ Science fiction at its best, making you think about issues such as terrorism and medical technology etc. i sincerely hope that they continue this series (instead of canceling it as they seem to have) and we get to find out how this story ends.
Firefly ~ Once i gave in to Serenity my curiosity was piqued and i gave in to Firefly, too. The original (unaired) pilot would have been a much better choice to air first (i might have actually given the show a fair try instead of acting so much like Chubuncle) but alas Fox as a rule acts idiotic and kills the shows that show the most promise. i went on to watch Fillion in the quickly canceled Drive... and must admit though i am annoyed by how Whedon is so down on Star Trek i also appreciate his vision of the future.
Heroes ~ Geeks rule!!! i had heard that this show was good, but who really cares about saving a cheerleader anyway? (; i finally decided to watch it simply for Greg Grunberg but was entirely pulled in. i love Hiro and Peter's characters and liked the Man with the Horn Rimmed glasses a lot more than i was expecting. Oh and of course seeing David Anders again is awesome! i'm really looking forward to the new season.
Grey's Anatomy ~ i started watching this show while i worked at KJCT 8 and discovered that i actually liked it more than i thought i would. So through the power of Netflix i started getting the first season and fell in love with the show. Yes, it's soap operish and angsty and there are a lot of affairs going on, but i really identify with Meredith even when i have never been in the same situation, felt the same way, or been nearly as psychotic. This most recent season was incredibly weak, mostly because i never liked George and Izzie together (or Izzie and Denny for that matter). The Ava arc got a little old and had a really astonishing twist at the end, and though i originally liked Alex and Izzie together, if they get them back together i am now going to be extremely disappointed. i like Meredith's sister Lexie and George together, however, so that will be interesting to see unfold.
Inu-Yasha ~ i started watching this because it's my ex's favorite show but also came to like it. It's got a good mix of action, romance, and comedy (even if it is corny as all get out and mostly filler instead of actually containing episodes where they come face to face with their real nemesis, Naraku). i like the first couple of seasons best, hated the band of seven, and am eager to see how things end up, but am not sure that i like where it's going as well as i liked where it came from. But watching this show has made me become more interested in anime, that and the myriad of Hayao Miyazaki films that i've been watching this summer. Just this week i started watching Vandread as a result of my Inu-Yasha obsession (though the plot is completely different i must admit).
Jericho ~ Another modern day science fiction tv show that is (was nearly?) cancelled, this one about politics and terrorism in a small town. i had meant to watch this show from the beginning, but it turned out to be on the same time as another show that i watch... i'm not sure which one actually. This show's pacing and subject matter is a bit different, but i still like the show and don't want it to end, even if it isn't at the forefront of my viewing choices.
Lost ~ Though at the moment it feels like it's the farthest thing from my mind, i still love Lost and faithfully watch it every week when it's on. The Jack/Kate saga is still pissing me off, i still love Sawyer and Hurley, and i still can't decide whether i like/trust Locke or not.
NCIS ~ My old standby and the only mystery crime fix i really indulge in any more (i rarely watch Law & Order or CSI anymore), these characters still feel like family and make me laugh. The crimes still keep me guessing and make you think.
Prisonbreak ~ Wentworth Miller is still dreamy, and i totally missed most of season two, but i want to catch up on dvd as soon as possible.
Private Practice ~ Not as good as Grey's, but i love Addison, and this show makes me cry nearly ever week (and that's a good thing... in a way).
Pushing Daisies ~ The irritating narrator's voice aside, this show can be extremely funny in a very quirky way. i appreciate the grumpy P.I.'s knitting. The romance is a bit strange... we'll have to see what happens.
Samantha Who? ~ This is very funny and i appreciate Christian Applegate so much more in this role than in Anchorman (though she was funny in that as well). The cast is excellent (even the small part of Nikki from Lost) and seeing Tim Russ again (being funny no less) is refreshing.
Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles ~ Lena Headey isn't quite how i picture Sarah Connor, but i like her just the same. But really, the star of this show is Summer Glau, and i want to trust Cameron, i'm just not sure that i should.
Ugly Betty ~ Ridiculous, soap operish, hilarious, and sometimes frustrating, but i love America and the antics that everyone gets into.
Last but (not?) least... Battlestar Gallactica ~ i've been watching the original series on NBC.com, and can definitely see why 20th Century Fox sued, but still find it completely different from Star Wars. It's also to see what Bellisario was working on at the beginning of his career. i have two episodes left i think, and then the second season, and the new show... i'm not sure how much i care about it really, but it's there when i get bored.
As far as the fall lineup... i'm full! i might check out Christian Slater's new show. i just discovered that Victor Garber is going to be in a miniseries that looks interesting. And i watch way too much tv, but Lost is nearly over and some of these shows probably are already over. ):

The Economist (spoilers if you missed it)
Teaser
wth? Has Sayid become an assassin? He certainly knows how to negotiate himself off the Island, promising to recover Charlotte is now a veritable certainty. We now know who 4 of the Oceanic Six are: Jack, Kate, Hurley, and Sayid. I assume that Sawyer is one, because of comments that Kate made to Jack in last season's finale, and i wager that Juliet is the sixth.
Act 1
MICHAEL is in the credits. i get the distinct impression that Sayid is not with Nadia and that he's working for Abaddan. The episode's title seems to point to the blonde's boss being Sayid's ultimate target. Jack doesn't look to Kate as his go-to girl anymore: he goes to Juliet. But he did have something else that he wanted Kate to do, so is he trying to stay on Kate's side while publicly displaying his preference for Juliet? Or did he not trust Juliet with Sayid still? Or maybe with Ben?
Act 2
What's going on with the experiment? i feel like i missed something. The Others left laundry still on the clothesline. i CANNOT believe that they locked Hurley in a closet. i think that Jacob is more likely to be talking to Hurley in the near future than he is to be talking to Locke. i feel like Locke has totally lost his way... ever since the hatch blew up i don't understand him.
Act 3
"Oh great, the ship sent us another Sawyer." rofl
So... the Island is 31 minutes off in time?
What's that black poster in the wall in Ben's room? Looks like a star map or some such (overlaid with a map of the Island? Are things on the Island laid out like they are in the sky?).
A bookcase hiding a doorway... to a closet full of men's clothing. AND CASH, passports, all with Ben's photos: how Alias of him.
HURLEY WAS IN ON IT!?!?!?!? what in the world?!?!?!?
Act 4
Sawyer doesn't want to go back to civilization... he wants to marry Kate.
Ben looks awful.
What's the list about? And why does that girl have the same bracelet as Naomi?
Act 5
Desmond getting off the Island does not include him as one of the Oceanic Six: he wasn't on the flight. For that matter, i guess Juliette leaving the Island wouldn't make her one of the Six, either, so the question still remains... who are the last two members of the Oceanic Six?
Somehow i knew it was Ben that was waiting for Sayid, but i cannot think of any reason that Sayid would be working for Ben. If it weren't for the fact that we know that Sayid is alive and off the Island in the future then i would be very nervous about his being on the helicopter with Frank and Desmond.

Confirmed Dead repeat (live)
Right now a repeat of last week's episode is on with little trivia tidbits sprinkled throughout. I'm at the beginning of act two, where Mr. Miles "Ghost Whisperer" no last name is talking to an empty teenagers room and making off with a big was of cash. Interesting facts about Act I... The woman in Daniel's house is not his wife, it's a caretaker. Daniel Faraday is named in honor of Michael Faraday, a physicist who investigated electromagnetism and gravity. His comment about light is supposedly a clue about the properties of the Island... i'm lost.
Ben is still getting under everyone's skin, and it's interesting to see him finally using his silver tongue out in the open.
Who expected to see Sayid and Juliet teaming up? Only a couple of days ago he was insisting that he and Sawyer be allowed to get answers out of her (actually, it's rather interesting that Sayid and Sawyer were working together, too. You have to remember, season one is years ago to us, but it's only a couple of weeks ago to the castaways).
Interesting to observe... Ben riles Sawyer by talking about Kate. Jack and Juliet have little moments together. Hurley and Sawyer may become best friends next.
Act 3
Charlotte is named after C.S. Lewis (wow, Chronicles of Narnia reference) and seems to know something about Dharma and polar bears being in deserts where they shouldn't be. Miles' sarcasm is actually refreshing compared to Charlotte's false niceness and feigned interest in the castaways. I like Charlotte better than Miles, she has guts (she dove head first into unknown waters for instance), but she just seems a bit socially awkward. She knows what she wants and she goes for it, acting polite just seems fake.
Act 4
Greg finally gets a name! Seth Norris married his high school sweetheart at 19: verrrrry interesting. Frank feels guilty that he wasn't flying the plane when it crashed, and Seth died as a result. i miss Greg Grunberg (he's why i started watching Heroes, plain and simple) and hope we get more info on Seth. Well, time for the new ep! Good thing Charlotte was wearing a bullet proof vest lol... or is it?
Act 5
Abaddan is the guy who visited Hurley, and apparently hired the rescuers. Naomi refers to Charlotte as a head case (hm... another crazy?). Frank knows the manifest by memory and that Juliet is a "native"... which is what they called the people Ben joined. Ben doesn't know what the Black Smoke Monster is, apparently, but he does know who Charlotte is (and presumably the rest of the team).
Who was flying the helicopter that Naomi bailed out of? How many people are on the freighter and who is the "man" on the boat??? Is the name of the boat Rescue? Are Michael and Walt aboard? New ep is starting now.
It occurred to me halfway through this ep (this second viewing) that our impressions of these rescuees/searchers for Ben are probably going to be vastly different in the future. For instance, when Mr. Friendly was introduced he originally seemed very menacing, but when Sawyer finally killed him... it was a shock for me in a way because i knew i would actually miss him. i am wondering what is wrong about anyone wanting to find Ben, but also what's so special about him.

so...
i know that i created this blog as an outlet for Lost. i've been writing about tv shows for a long time, most specifically Star Trek (Voyager and Enterprise), Dark Angel, and Alias. But i've never been able to launch a webpage or blog that does everything i want it to do. i like writing about tv, movies, books, and think that there would be a lot more content here if i expanded this blog. Everything doesn't just happen for a reason on Lost, there are a lot of other shows that i felt were like that, too. It's one of the ways to write a good story or screenplay, you don't put anything in there that doesn't directly influence the story, so you only put in something for a reason. So i am planning on expanding this blog to include other forms of entertainment as well. Happy viewing everyone.
the wait is finally over
Lost is returning!!! i've finished watching season three and am ready to find out what happens next. After the typical catching-back-up clip-extravaganza the fourth season will premiere with "The Beginning of the End."
"Feeling that their rescue is close at hand, the survivors don't know whether to believe Charlie's final message that the people claiming to liberate them are not who they seem to be. The band of friends, family, enemies and strangers must continue to work together against the cruel weather and harsh terrain if they want to stay alive. But as they have discovered during their 70-plus days on the island, danger and mystery loom behind every corner, and those they thought could be trusted may turn against them. Even heroes have secrets..."

my birthday present
No, not the One Ring, but season three on dvd. i totally did not expect to get it for my birthday, but lo and behold there it was. Season four is around the corner and i'm actually starting to get a little excited. Saw the new promo and Jack is still such a whiner. Let's hope we'll still be skating this season. (:
